Week One: Panic!

Week One Start Date: Jan. 11, 2016

Yowza! is all I have to say. What a week of crazy emotions and quite a bit of panic! The constant thoughts of "What have I done?!" "I can't do this!" "Wait, can I eat that?" "What do I do for fun now that I can't drink alcohol?!" "I have to wear WHAT?!" just about drove me out of my mind. I'm sure I drove all of my friends, family and co-workers a bit crazy as well. I constantly feel like the competition is both months away and next week. It seems like 16 weeks is a long time, but I know how quickly time passes and I'm terrified it will be a week away and I won't be ready.

I know that there are going to be many lessons learned on this journey, the first one, I think, is to learn to relax and trust the process. My coaches have done this many times and their athletes always do extraordinarily well. They know where my body should be twelve weeks out, eight weeks out, four weeks out and everday up to the competition. They are also not shy about letting you know when you need to step up your game!

I have nicknamed myself 'Last Minute Laurie' because, well, I work best under the pressure of "Oh, shit! This is due tomorrow!" This is one circumstance where I absolutely cannot cram at the last minute. Starving myself 24 hours before the competition will clearly not work and will get me nothing but embarrassment. I have to work on this diligently, methodically, everyday for the next 16 weeks. "Follow the plan, follow the plan, follow the plan" is my new mantra. Maybe when this is over my new mantra will be "Make a plan, make a plan, make a plan." Something to think about.
